Nesting Time...
It's the time of year when thoughts turn to the holiday season. A time for "feathering your nest", getting the house spruced up, inviting and cozy for family and friends.
Today was the first day we have been able to walk upstairs and not get hit by a blast of hot air.
Ahhhh, it feels so good.
This is also the time of year I start making nests.
My family lived in Germany for several years when I was a child. There is a German saying that if you find a birds nest in your Christmas tree your family will have health, wealth and happiness in the coming year.
Making nests has been a tradition of ours for many, many years ... (no, I will NOT tell you how many :) :) :) ) I make a number of small decorated nests at a reasonable price that people love to give as gifts and I have customers that come every year to see what the years nest will be. Then I make a few larger, special nests. Here are three of the larger ones in progress. The first pink nest will have more feathers added and I am still "pondering" what else to add. The gold nest is made of vintage buttons, vintage jewelry, lace and swarovski crystals. The red/burgundy nest also has vintage buttons, vintage tatting and berries...more berries will be added for sure. Each nest comes with a poem about the German legend.
Making the nests is a lot of fun and it could be a wonderful tradition for you to start with your family. Wouldn't it be fun to let each child add something to the nest? ... or if you used a button or scrap of fabric from a favorite shirt or dress they've grown out of? Each year you could make a new one and add something from the last year. Soon you will have a tree full of "nesting" memories.
If you don't celebrate Christmas you could start a nest wreath to hang on the door or over a fireplace.
My wish for you: A cozy home and lots of warm memories.

This is such a sweet tradition, isn't it? We always make nests, once in fall, once in spring, sometimes for Christmas.
My best friend growing up was German, and her Mom made nests for all of us. Yours are so sweet.
