of Hogsheads, Quintals, Tods and Fried Lettuce

Continuing with "Miscellaneous Tables Compromising Various Things Worth Knowing"
I'm going to skip the most boring stuff but I thought it was interesting (okay so I'm probably the only one and a bit odd...) that :

apples, green, a bushel-50 lbs.*

feathers-a bale=about 1 cwt (cwt is the traditional symbol for the hundredweight)

fish-a quintal-100 lbs. (a quintal is metric unit of mass, approx. 220 lbs.)

molasses, a hogshead- 130 to 150 gallons* (In the US a unit of volume equal to about 2 barrels or 63 gallons)

tea, a chest= 60 - 84 lbs*

Wood, a tod (tod is German for "load")=28 lbs

*in most states but varies

And now a recipe for fried lettuce:

Chop lettuce and the tops of 2 onions fine, add 2 well beaten eggs, put a little salad oil or butter into a frying pan, and pour in the mixture well beaten; cover, stir up when well heated and serve with vinegar or lemon juice, or without either according to taste.

mmmmmmyummmmeeeee ...let me know if you try this :)

Aren't you glad you stopped by? My wish for you: May you never run out of wood for your fire, salt for your cookin' or love from your family and friends.

Interesting! Couldn't guess what this was all about by the title, too funny. Have you tried the fried lettuce recipe, or are you waiting to see what the reviews are? lol

You know Francie, I bet that recipe is not bad at all. LOL... You should join us for some of the parties. (Rooster party) I don't do too many of them for lack of time but they do bring in readers to your blog which in turn brings people to your website. The next one I am doing is the cloche party. It's on my sidebar. Have you seen what's going on at SLS? We are doing a treasure chest each month and a Tuesday special. Join us if you haven't seen it. xo

Francie what a great post!! Isn't it too funny how times change so much- words, even down to the way we cook. I remember my mom making wilted lettuce once in a blue moon when I was a child. It seemed like it was something like this recipe!

I did a post about the sweet little cake you sent to me- I look at it every day in the little breakfast nook- always bring a smile everytime I see it!! THank you again so much!
